 Darrel Philbrook is a tyer from Crouseville, Maine with a keen interest in the classics. He has been tying now for over 50 years, (Wow!), and displays his flies on his website The Aroostook Fly Tyer a site that "will endeavor to promote the conservation of the cold water species of fishes, trout and salmon and also to promote the art of tying and dressing (as it is referred to in classic salmon flies) of flies, on the how to's and where's, in getting materials, and fishing condidtions for the northern Maine area."
I asked Darrell to write a short bio of himself as I do for all our contributing fly tyers. This is what he had to say:
I am a proud Mainer. I started to tie flies back in 1954. When I started I was just tying and fishing simple concoctions to imitate something that would catch a brookie. Well, then one week my mother came home from shopping and happened to
have a Family Circle magazine and in it was the first, I think, printed Nolls Flyting Guide and then things started to look up somewhat. By the way, I still have that first copy of Nolls original. Since then it has been one of the nicest hobbys that
anybody with any patience at all could enjoy. Most of the time it has been a hobby, but like most tiers, to support the habit I have sold a bunch of flies. I started to dress salmon flies back in the early 70's and still do a few flies a year. Using them has
decreased somewhat, but the urge to dress them is still there. I hope everybody will enjoy looking at the different renditions of my classic flies, and comparing the different techniques of the different Classic Fly Dressers.
